By learning more about sea turtles and the threats they face, you have already made a positive step towards protecting them.
Here is what you can do to help sea turtles in Bermuda:
- Protect seagrass beds and coral reefs. Do not anchor in these habitats.
- Do not pollute – remove trash, especially plastic bags and fishing line, as turtles may mistake these for food or entangle themselves. Balloons, especially helium filled, often end up in the sea.
- Do not disturb a sea turtle while it is resting, feeding or swimming. Keep a respectful distance.
- Never disturb or harass nesting turtles, by making noise, shining lights on them, or trying to touch or ride them.
- If you find a sick or injured turtle, notify the Bermuda Aquarium’s Rehabilitation Centre immediately by calling 441-293-2727, Press #999
- Keep a keen eye out for turtles, egg shells or turtle tracks on the beach – report any findings to the Bermuda Aquarium.
- Safe boating – cruise slowly to avoid collision with a turtle.
